tango waits for you

it sounded like a nice quote when i put it at this blog last year. then i had to stop dancing for several moth, due to an injury.
last week i started again and experienced the absolute truth of the statement for myself…
now i cherish the quote even more!

you know that you have the tango bug when….

- traffic flow on the interstate reminds you of good or bad floorcraft
- you practice tango moves with your shopping cart
- all your skirts have irregular hemlines
- you have dozens of pairs of shoes but can wear none of them on the street
- you only travel to places where you can find a milonga within 30 miles
- you only have a couple of friends left who don’t tango but never see them anymore
- you start giving away all your ‘big’ necklaces
- and do the same with the big earrings
- you know what cabeceo, colgada, gancho, lapiz, molinete, and sacada means

the path of tango

when i first started learning tango it seemed like a sheet of paper, and you have to learn the instructions on the front, and then the backside.
after a while however i observed the sheet of paper getting thicker, realizing it actually was a book – but still sealed with it’s protective wrapper.
then, month later the wrapper peeled away and finally, the book of tango opened up – many many pages to read from, and learn.
now i suspect the first impression was actually true – in that the ‘sheet of paper’ is more like an iPad – with a gazillion GB and more pages to read and learn from than all the books in the world could possibly hold!
when in reality it is just about the walk….
the path of tango, not the champs-elysees leading to the arc of triomphe. but a trail through the mountains and valleys of life, with new treasures, revelations, challenges and joys at every corner.

what better way to start the new year than with a milonga…
off to the tango festival in san diego to “field-test” the new taroes™ milonga dress! available in the store by mid january.

after a year of dancing i feel as if i am just starting to grasp the deeper secrets of tango…. by realizing there aren’t really any – it’s as simple as:
keep your own balance,
always have your weight on one foot,
listen to your partner.
if you can do that any halfway experienced leader will make you look as if you are dancing for years. right?
if there wouldn’t be that ‘derrière’ which is still sticking out the moment i forget to remember to tuck it in!
and then, yesterday, the revelation: don’t think about tucking in the behind, think about pulling up the lower abdomen, and voilà, works like a charm!
